We - and the rest of the audience - thought the music was great and the story moved along well. There was definitely much audience buy-in to the story, with much hand clapping with each song and applause throughout the show for each 'number'. There was a heartfelt 'standing O' when the show ended. I think was an enjoyable evening (though I would have to agree with some of the inconsistencies you mention - such as Rexi, despite mention of time in rehab). Considering the humor, the music, and costumes it was a thoroughly fun and entertaining evening. Everyone seemed to exit the theater smiling which is always a good sign!
Sue K.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13839669440007303452noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2217372989018944697.post-12174805020763560922016-06-25T12:01:51.452-04:002016-06-25T12:01:51.452-04:00Nick--thanks for the comment. And i still wonder where are the differences between germany and NY. I visited Rocky in Hamburg / Germany and i'm not the only one who found it one of the most breathtaking and stunning musicals i ever saw - critics are excellent and it's sold out nearly every day. And while visiting Rocky with my wife i noticed that this musical fits best for boys and girls! So i really don't understand, why this show has lost on broadway?! You're certainly right with what you say, otherwise critics were very good but then visitors didn't came. So maybe its not because of the musical, but the people? However, I was exposed to a few of the songs because of your show. I can't evaluate the show yet but I think the song "Raining" is absolutely beautiful and very reminiscent of the excellence of Ragtime. I am surprised that you thought it was so underwhelming. I love your podcast. It's nice to be exposed to some older musicals as I was born in 1975 and my musical love started with Hair. The way the writer brings the audience in as part of the show, in being her "guests" to share her memories, along with the method in which the director stages the acting, props, set design and scrim to send the message of this amazing woman's life and how she "Became Dr. Ruth", was brilliant. Debra Rupp's portrayal of this legendary sex therapist is warm and embracing, at best. Debra showed us Dr. Ruth's strength through emotional memories, innocent humor within tender topics of sex (as her aim was to "educate" and thus improve our world by it...which I believe she succeeded), while digging deep into her heart to draw up those memories that framed her life and forging forward through tremendous obstacles to do so...could not have been better protrayed even by Dr. Ruth herself. My applause to everyone associated with this show and I personally thank Dr. Ruth for giving us the opportunity to know her a little better and letting us love her for who she really is and the process of her "BECOMING DR. The
multidimensional show provides in a new way to Broadway, for the audience to be
a part of the show. The characters were more than interesting to me, symbolic and mythic while very real and three dimensional. No moment could be anticipated, but the play flowed to a perfect climax and conclusion. I have a brother who is like Rooster, although not quite so noble. He too is surrounded by underachievers and teenagers, and can spin a yarn with the best of them. I really loved the set with its live chickens and holey sofa, and the tweet of birdsong throughout the house--England on a bad day in the wrong century. The audience around me, however, mostly women from the suburbs, were bothered by the "wordiness" and somehow considered Rooster an evil mastermind like James Jones. "No, no," I said. The character of Johnny 'Rooster' Byron is an an interesting one - you shouldn't like him but you are drawn to him (like the other characters in the play) Having seen Jerusalem both in London and on Broadway I would say the only disappointment in the Broadway transfer is the casting of John Gallagher Jr as Lee - his accent lacks in consistency, he is too conventionally 'good looking' for the character of Lee and he doesn't quite capture the awkwardness of the character as well as Tom Brooke did.Cordiinoreply@blogger.com
